Summer Hanging Out Late Night Partying. This Is the Magic Mixture.

The Magic Mixture were a British psychedelic band comprised Terry Thomas (guitar/vocals), Melvyn Hacker (bass), Jack Collins (drums) and Stan Curtis (organ). Mel and Terry were both students at the Central Foundation Boys School in London in the early of 60's. After some line up changes they released their sole album in 1968. It is regarded as one of the better examples of the psych genre, featuring engaging instrumental work on tracks such as ‘(I’m So) Sad’, ‘Urge To Leave’ and ‘Slowly The Day’

In the fifth part of THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY 2018 we remembered Richard Swift, Vince Martin (who recorded a lovely album with Fred Neil in 1964 after Dino Valenti's intervention), Stan Lewis (composer of Susie-Q), Polish free-jazz trumpetist Tomasz Stanko, Randy Rampage.

Talk about The Magic Mixture - This Is The Magic Mixture

Zeleence
The 60’s were productive years ... perhaps at times too productive, though if one explores these years, you’ll find that most of the bands that rose during these heady days had some real talent, some sincere visions, and a burning desire to shape a bit of the music scene with their sonic atmospheres. There’s no way today, that I can convince you of the magic found within these highly prized and rare grooves, where these lads from London, touting themselves [and bit over zealously] as some sort of Cream-Hendrix hybrid would break new ground. While their sound was exceedingly tight, focused, and well polished, they did not possess the blues power of Cream, nor were they able to capture the magic, the flash, and vision of Jim Hendrix ... yet enough of us, based on rumors and supposition, mixed this album into our collections. To me, Magic Mixture conjure images of early Zombies with their use of a prominently placed Hammond organ, and etherial vocals. But please, don’t be too hard on me, many of us also allowed Paul Revere & The Raiders, Sam The Sham, and a host of other minor players to filter into our bedrooms, perhaps to be played once or twice, then shelved for all eternity.I hadn’t listen to this piece of wax, which was cut nearly live in the studio in one day, in years. And while the songs are good, they’re not really rock, and certainly not as psychedelic as the album cover suggests. Yet despite all this, they did pulsate with the moment, and will perhaps find their way into some movie soundtrack based on the times. Regardless ... This Is The Magic Mixture, should certainly be considered an essential part of the garage psych movement that flowered during 1968.Review by Jenell Kesler
