Mirror Man is the fifth studio album by American rock band Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, released in April 1971 by Buddah Records. It contains material that was recorded for the label in 1967 and originally intended for release as part of an abandoned project entitled It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. Much of the material from this project was subsequently re-recorded and released through a different label as Strictly Personal (1968).

In 2010 French released Beefheart: Through the Eyes of Magic, which is an incredible insight into a world of mad genius. It really is a great pleasure to talk to you, John. One of the very first bands you were part of were Merrell and The Exiles. In April 1964, Please Be Mine reached no. 9 in the local Palmdale station KUTY charts! As Exiles you released two singles in 1964, one in 1965 and another one later in 1967 titled Tomorrow’s Girl, When I Get Home. In 1966 more Merrell and The Exiles sessions took place in Hollywood at the Gary Paxton Studio and in 1967 at the Gold Star Studio with a changing line-up. World of Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band was very strange. Can you take us back and tell us about the lyrics and concept of the band? For instance what was Don referring to with a title like safe as milk ?
Renowned nowadays as a genius, a man who set out to destroy boundaries and recreate with warped blues riffs and horn riffs, his music was and still is very love it or hate it. A musical abortion in every sense of the word, Trout Mask Replica is an 80 minute ride to the depths of hell and back. Guitars are out of tune and time, drum tracks scatter all the tape and Beefheart’s vocals are ridiculously raspy and harsh, sometimes devolving into wild feral yells and cries. Instruments collide into each at an alarming rate with seemingly no regard for cohesion or listening enjoyment. There are times things tone down a bit, like on the unaccompanied poetry tracks (‘The Dust Blows Forward N’ the Dust Blows Back’, ‘Well’, ‘Orange Claw Hammer’) and at times even oddly touching (‘Frownland’ and the completely deranged love song ‘When Big Joan Sets Up’) but the chaos still emanates though nearly every track.
Captain Beefheart’s 1969 masterpiece set an unmatched standard for avant-rock. This new reissue from Third Man puts it back in print on vinyl. The rushing climaxes of Ella Guru, the building swing of Pachuco Cadaver, and the swaying blues of She’s Too Much for My Mirror are all earworm inducers, as their multiple sonic elements coagulate into melody, like filaments spastically aligned by a magnet. Over five decades, Trout Mask Replica has proven incredibly durable, still sounding as bracing and radical as any rock music since.
