Hermann Prey was born in Berlin and grew up in Germany. He was scheduled to be drafted when World War II ended. He studied voice at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and won the prize of the Frankfurt contest of the Hessischer Rundfunk in 1952. His son Florian is also a baritone. He died in Krailling, Bavaria. Pianists who accompanied Hermann Prey in recitals and/or recordings of Lied repertoire include Karl Engel, Gerald Moore, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Leonard Hokanson, Friedrich Gulda, Jörg Demus, Walter Klien and Michael Endres.

These recordings of Beethoven's Lieder were made 1987-89 in Berlin by a nearly 60 year old, more mature Hermann Prey (1929-1998). Prey had a beautiful, "honeyed" voice, and I really enjoy his singing of lieder and opera. In these recordings his breath control is sometimes a bit strained at ends of held notes, but his singing is always tasteful and beautiful. He gives some lieder the necessary coloring of voice they need to express a certain mood or meaning. I especially like Prey's recording here of "Adelaide" - very beautifully done.
