You take 17 Lennon-McCartney songs they never recorded and create an instant ‘lost’ Beatles album. Listening to these versions by Graham Parker, Bill Janovitz (Buffalo Tom) and Kate Pierson (B-52’s), it’s clear that John and Paul’s give-aways deserved a lot better than the often trite arrangements they were given at the time. Highlights include Janovitz’s World Without Love (Peter & Gordon) and Pierson’s I’m In Love (The Fourmost). But the revelation is Tip Of My Tongue.

A baffling idea, this: cut new versions of obscure Lennon & McCartney songs originally sold to quickly forgotten artists looking to cash in on the first flash of Beatlemania. For any serious Beatles fan, this album may be a revelation; most of these 17 tracks have enough to hang new arrangements on, and a few like "It’s For You” and "Woman” (both done by Janovitz in his best Elvis Costello impersonation), could have fit nicely onto Rubber Soul or Revolver. But generally these were tunes the pair knocked off to make a fast buck, so the challenge becomes how to find something meaningful in them.

From A Window" by Graham Parker has an instrumental backing that sounds like the Hollie. This is one of the really great lost Lennon and McCartney songs. Step Inside Love" features Kate Pierson and Johnny Society with Kate also doing background vocals. This is fun but doesn't hold a candle to the Cilla Black version. I would highly recommend it to fans of Kate Pierson or Graham Parker and to collectors of Beatles covers.
