A Brand New Book Lyrics. I once read the story of somebody's life I had a few moments to spare He was a good man who lived with his wife With the usual kids in his hair There was happiness a lot of weirdness And a sprinkle of tragedy I pulled it by chance from a second hand bin But it could've been written just for. me. CHORUS Because the words came out Not twist and shout Cause that's not what a grown man writes about That chapter's over, let it blow over I found that I've become the owner Of a brand new book A brand new book

As Parker himself lamented in his 1979 single Mercury Poisoning - a scathing attack on his record company and their failure to advance his career - he was the best kept secret in the west. London born Parker first came to the fore in the mid 70s after fate decreed that he should meet up with the Rumour, a band whose members included alumni from pub rock stalwarts, Brinsley Schwarz and Ducks Deluxe. As the E Street Band was to Bruce Springsteen, and Crazy Horse to Neil Young, so the Rumour was to Parker. His biting lyrics were delivered in a raw, urgent, passionate manner that presaged punk.
A Brand New Book - Graham Parker. 9. Weeping Statues - Graham Parker. 10. Guardian Angel - Graham Parker. I saw Graham Parker and the Rumour (an underrated band in their own right) several time back in the day, and they always put on a great live show. His second and arguably best album is skipped (Heat Treatment), and his eleventh is included (Struck by Lightning, which despite the cover of the box set, does not include the Rumour). Why not just the first five albums? Oh well, great music that I will undoubtedly purchase, and get Heat Treatment separately.

Struck by Lightning was the culmination of Graham Parker's previous two records, where he increasingly began to chronicle domestic tasks and affairs of the married heart. For such an intimate subject, Parker wisely decided to scale back the musical ambition of Human Soul on Struck by Lightning, recording a lean, stripped-down album that relied heavily on acoustic guitars. Appropriately, his lyrics were some of the most concise he had written in years, breathing life into tales like "The Kid with the Butterfly Net" and "Wrapping Paper.
