Differences between versions: All iterations of Space Ritual appear to come from the same sets of concerts. The earlier iterations such as original Space Ritual release as well as releases named Volume 1 and Volume 2 appear to have been live recordings with studio overdubs. Later iterations such as those titled Space Ritual At Sundown Vol1/2 and 1985 release Space Ritual Vo. appear to contain just live recordings without any studio overdubs.

Although his intergalactic musings date the album, coming across now as camp futurism, they still provide fitting atmospheric preambles to Hawkwind's astounding, mind-warping sounds

Hawkwind is the self-titled debut album by Hawkwind, released in 1970, originally on Liberty Records, later reissued on Sunset Records. This album is historic since it is one of the first space rock LPs. The Pretty Things guitarist Dick Taylor, who was looking for a new venture after leaving the band, was pulled into Hawkwind playing some gigs and producing this album. After several unsuccessful attempts to capture the band's sound in the studio, it was decided simply to record it live in the studio.

Hawkwind - Space Ritual Vo. (LTD. 180g Coloured Vinyl 2-LPs) BACK ON BLACK. The average Hawkwind fan speaks of Space Ritual as a near religious experience, but I felt this album to be closer to a bum trip. As with afficionados of the much better known Grateful Dead, Hawkwind fans will always tell you that the band was best experienced live and (let's be honest here) stoned. Most of them will also assure you that Space Ritual is the ultimate Hawkwind album (no mean feat considering this band has scores of albums out), but I vehemently disagree. Yet Space Ritual wouldn't be nearly be the great album it is without Lemmy's heroic and powerful yet precise basslines which propel the bands celestial soundscapes into the depths of space.
