Hawkwind arguably only really became a space rock band with the arrival of Calvert, or certainly one whose image and lyrical themes became overtly science fictional. More importantly, it was Calvert’s gonzoid intelligence that saved Hawkwind from becoming a psychedelic novelty act – even Silver Machine, the band’s surprise hit single from 1972, turns out to be inspired by Alfred Jarry’s essay How to Construct a Time Machine, which Calvert interpreted as actually being about how to build a bicycle. Calvert recorded another album with Hawkwind – the brilliant Hawklords/25 Years on – before leaving to pursue other projects.

The album sets out with two heavily orchestrated and rather dark tracks, Seahawks and Blood of the Earth. As their topic is the deplorable state in which mankind has brought it is understandable that the atmosphere is rather somber. Hawkwind’s pessimism with the state of affairs in the environmental sense is well known The next track, Wraith will surely make the lovers of the heaver Hawkwind a little bit happy as it here and there reminds of 1970’s tracks
