In the summer of 1971, George Harrison was moved by his friend Ravi Shankar's concern for the millions of refugees fleeing civil war and flooding in Bangladesh by pouring into Ravi's homeland of Bengal in Northern India. George, with the help of his then-manager Allen Klein, organized two groundbreaking benefit concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden to raise funds to alleviate the suffering and promote worldwide awareness of the humanitarian crisis
The Concert for Bangladesh was one of the most ambitious humanitarian efforts in rock music history, and focused global attention on the crisis in Bangladesh while raising new awareness of UNICEF and its role in the developing world. In the tradition established by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF continues to support UNICEF programs in Bangladesh while expanding its influence to include other countries in crisis where children are at risk.
