Talk about Way Out West - Ajare

Peculiar record where label states 45rpm but plays at 33rpm!

forget the aside [even tho nick is a great guy , hi nick!] - its all about dj pierre's WILDPITCH mix , hes has had many moments but this stands out for me as one of his peaks . simple nagging house b-line , and that riff . the vox sample is def american accapella style of the like todd and pierre would have used . like all pierre tracks its about the journey and the sounds as it steadily builds and builds into numerous layers and walls of sound . put it on , stand back and enjoy . love pierre , acid house pioneer outta chicago , and maker of one of THE fisrt ever house tracks , recoring as the legendary PHUTURe

Way Out West released AJARE originally in 1994, and the original mix is a classic breaks track, with an Hindi vocal weaving its way through the electronic undergrowth. But on their own remix, here, they give the vocal more prominence at the start clear clear out space throughout for it. Brothers in Rhythm, however, dispense with the vocal until the middle of their progressive house builder, while Matthew Roberts brings forth the drums with his slightly moodier mix. A good track, and a good collection of mixes to go with it.

why on earth is this listed as tech house?!

The main vocal sample in "Ajare" is something in Hindi. Almost certainly from an old film music score/piece/OST, though if so, not 100% sure which. I believe the proper words in Hindi are "aaja re" meaning something like "come back". The only clues all the releases the track appears on give are the name "T. Siddique" and "Thank you to DJ Task". Some Googling came up with song "Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar Aaja" (en: "Come, Come O My Beloved Come") from Bollywood film "Noorie" (1971) [thanks YouTube ;-)]. But whether this truly is the exact source is unclear. I'd be interested to know the source, if anyone knows more?

Defiantly one of my all time favourite tracks and mostly for it's kitchen sink type brilliance. The UK House scene around this time tended to whack anything into their tracks, just as long as it works. There are few progressive house type records I've heard that have had actual scratching and a hip-hop type mentality in it's song structure. It's structure is something I've had problems with DJing it since it doesn't give you any leeway, it's all bang and nothing else. Another reason for it's brilliance.DJ Pierre's remix on the flip is nice and was a big record amongst the wild pitch loving crowd but I didn't think that much of it. It's a nice version and I liked how he tweaked the sounds and the way he worked the samples, it's just good not awesome.

It's about the mix-out really, i know it does have a mix-in. you get a 16 bars right after that second break, then it's bang again, i mean what the fuck.

But there's a good 30 seconds of straight 4/4 kick at the start of Ajare. Surely it couldn't be simpler to dj with?

"Masterpiece" isn't a word to be thrown around lightly, but the Way Out West Remix is, bar none, the best combination of soaring vocals, delicate strings, tough-as-nails breaks & bouncing baseline to come out of the last decade. The intro alone--32 bars of slowed down, majestic chill breaks adorned with haunting female vocals--is well-worth the price. The Brothers In Rhythm is good, and although tough to beatmatch into, it's also more 4/4 friendly--but the two aren't even in the same league. It's become something of a ritual for me to close w/ the '97 Remix of Ajare, & it has not failed me yet. Apathetic crowds, bad ambiance, trainwrecking on my part--this tune overcomes anything & everything. It comes on, hits you in the face with the breaks and then heals all that's bad away with those trembling, sublime vocals. Don't matter WHAT you play--if you don't carry this in your bag, you are a Bad DJ, & you should be ashamed of yourself.

"Ajare" (and the rest of Way Out West's "Blue"/self titled album) is a perfect example of what was right about the progressive scene in late 90's. This is some of Nick and Jody's best work, they have captured a unique sound and created a masterpiece with it. Dave Seaman & Steve Anderson's mix is also top notch, bringing the track into a bigger floor friendly orbit while keeping the original elements in the fore front.
