Perils from the Sea. Caldo Verde. That makes Perils from the Sea unique in Kozelek’s recent catalog. He mostly turns over all the non-vocal responsibilities to Lavalle, so instead of plucks and strums, we hear forlorn beeps and bloops- somewhat more hushed than on the Album Leaf output, yet distinctively textured and tailored to Kozelek’s signature phrasings. Lavalle favors a subtle pulse and thrum that gently reinforces the concreteness of the details.

Perils from the Sea is a collaborative studio album by American singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek and t Jimmy LaValle, released on April 30, 2013 on Caldo Verde Records. The track, "You Missed My Heart", previously appeared on Kozelek's live album, Live at Phoenix Public House Melbourne (2013). On September 11, 2011, Sun Kil Moon's Mark Kozelek asked Jimmy LaValle, of The Album Leaf, to collaborate on a song, resulting in the album's opening track, "What Happened to My Brother"

Perils From The Sea' is the debut collaboration by The Album Leaf's t Jimmy LaValle and Sun Kil Moon singer Mark Kozelek. The project began on Sept 11, 2011, when Kozelek, a fan and acquaintance of LaValle, asked Jimmy to co-write a song. LaValle, a long time admirer of Kozelek's work, said yes, and the track 'What Happened To My Brother' came together quickly. Pleased with the results, the two agreed to record an entire album

The album was recorded on April 6, 2014 in Biko Club in Milano, Italy. It features live renditions of Sun Kil Moon tracks, as well as selections from Kozelek's respective 2013 collaborative albums with Jimmy LaValle and Desertshore, Perils from the Sea (2013) and Mark Kozelek & Desertshore (2013). The tracks "I Love My Dad" and "Tavoris Cloud" were recorded on April 4, 2014 at Circolo Degli Artisti in Rome, Italy.

Kozelek (aka Sun Kil Moon, Red House Painters) is remarkably efficient at creating meaningful and realistic scenes that could tell whole stories themselves, while LaValle (aka The Album Leaf) writes music like a jawbreaker that reveals entire new layers every few listens. Regardless of what I find in the next seven weeks, this has my vote for best release of 2013.

The learning experience that is Sun Kil Moon and The Album Leaf will play their first concert together at Holland’s UE Festival on May 11, before journeying over to merry olde England for a May 13 date at Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
