Universal Themes is the seventh studio album by American indie folk act Sun Kil Moon, released on June 2, 2015 on Caldo Verde Records. The album was preceded by the singles, "The Possum", "Garden of Lavender" and "Ali/Spinks 2", and features contributions from Sonic Youth drummer and Benji collaborator Steve Shelley. Noting the "spoken segments, garage-rock and pretty acoustic passages", Jon Dennis of The Guardian described the overall sound of the album as "intimate and minimal".

If you’re hoping for a repeat of last year’s ‘Benji’ you’re in for a disappointment. Where that album was magnificent in its confrontation of the universality, inevitability and variety of death, ‘Universal Themes’ is a lot more drab and sketchy. Plus, where ‘Benji’ had songs, its successor sort of has the same ‘song’ eight times. It goes like this: ‘I went to to play a gig.

Universal Themes may be the first Mark Kozelek album to carry any sense of expectation behind it since the mid-nineties. Even early Sun Kil Moon classics like Ghosts of the Great Highway and April, while not exactly falling on deaf ears, were more like whispered secrets between Kozelek and the listener. 2010’s Admiral Fell Promises, a truly solo oice record, drew a line in the sand for what you might call his Lyric Writing Era.
