Arm's Way is the second studio album by Montreal-based Indie rock band, Islands. It was released on May 20, 2008 on CD and download. The album's title is a play on the words "harm's way". The album leaked online on April 11, 2008. Drummer Aaron Harris outlined the album's concept and the band's songwriting approach thus: We took a different approach with this album in that the music is focused on the band members - there are not any special appearances

Arm's Way is collection of sometimes grievous pop tunes that continue Thorburn's fixation with the dark corners of his/our psyche - rocks he turned over with glee for the Unicorns and Islands' first release. Their first album cemented the long-known fact the white dudes like to borrow their aesthete from traditional and contemporary African music alike. With their "we do Paul Simon's Graceland better than you" schoolyard taunts levied, Thorburn and crew soldiered past their excellent cosmopolitan debut.

Arm’s Way, Islands’ second full-length effort and followup to 2006’s Return to the Sea, is an excellent mix of catchy tunes and strong musical skill from Nick Thorburn and crew, resulting in one of the most diverse and enjoyable new albums in recent memory. A veritable melting pot of musical genres and influences, unlike Thorburn’s previous works with past band The Unicorns and the Islands debut, this album focuses more on musical structure and tightness. Definitely a more pop friendly track, Pieces of You is one of the shorter and less progressive tracks on a very diverse album. From the Paul Simon influenced rumba section in J’aime vous voir quitter to the Spaghetti-Western guitars on The Arm, the Pink Floyd stylings of Vertigo (If It’s a Crime), and the classical violins on To a Bond Islands are the most dissimilar band of the current indie rock circuit.

Arm's Way" takes some new risks with the Islands' sound. And while a couple songs have too much ordinary guitar rock, the album overall ends up quirky, danceable and enjoyable. Lots of energy, and lots of weird. Opener "The Arm" starts off softly with a tinge of crashing cymbals here, a gentle guitar melody there, topped off with a slowly building hum, before exploding into one of the most epic guitar riffs I've heard in indie rock this year, complete with arching violins and enough musical shifts to last half an album (the marching interlude is particularly effective).

The Arm, Kids Don't Know Shit, and I Feel Evil Creeping In are each excellent examples of this. Interestingly, this is the album that earned Islands their place here in Progarchives. To me, it is their debut album that is their proggiest, although I understand why this one got them included here. There is a bit of maturity here, and the addition of violins, that gives the music here a more distinctly symphonic texture here as opposed to their very indie-sounding debut. The songs here are tighter and more consistent than they were on the debut, which is both a blessing and a curse  .
