That the album could appeal as much to a Bowie or King Crimson fan as a listener steeped in the jazz sphere these three players inhabit says a lot about the seamlessness of Visitors’ ingenious stylistic blend. Probably best known as a foil for eminent singers like Etta Jones and soul-jazz greats such as Richard Groove Holmes, tenor ace Houston Person has ventured all across the genre in a career spanning more than five decades. Here he’s matched with one of the relatively few musicians alive who could boast a similar range and longevity: super-bassist, Guinness World Record holder and follow octogenerian Ron Carter, his duo partner stretching back decades. The album documents a London scene that has received global attention for the way it’s made jazz feel youthful, danceable, newly urgent.

Why You Need This Album: Hear the swinging jazz vocalist Carmen McRae honor her friend and idol, Billie Holiday, soon after Holiday’s passing. McRae’s smooth, pure voice hits home in every tune, and the band, including trumpeter Nat Adderley, complements Holiday with beautifully crafted solos. Captured not long before his self-imposed exile from the scene, Rollins recruited two different rhythm sections for the album, which is still one of the highlights of the Village Vanguard’s recorded output (no small feat!). In each case, the original album is (wisely) preserved intact on one CD, while a second CD collects period singles, live performances, and a smattering of alternate mixes and unreleased material. Artwork is supplemented with alternate takes from photo-sessions, and it's a jarring experience for collector scum like myself to see and hear these goofy blooper reels and deleted scenes, in which the avatars of colder-than-thou aesthetics stand on one foot or giggle. Kirkland also played with jazz greats, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and drummer Elvin Jones, in the 80s, and appeared on five albums by ex-Police frontman, Sting.
