Kemialliset Ystävät (pronunciation here; English translation: Chemical Friends) is an ever changing group of free form pilots revolving around Jan Anderzén. They have been sending murky audio clouds from their basement in Tampere, Finland to the people of the world since 1995. The band works in short, spooling instrumentals, building layers of simple repetitive riffs into laminal mudcakes and weaving ghosts of folk song into huge tunnels of drone.

Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa is the first Kemialliset Ystävät album in four years. The album title is from visions of rivers running down from Heart of Darkness to the City of Joyful Noise. If contemporary music is a high speed train passing by then KY's music would be an orgy of light under a railway bridge.

Led by Jan Anderzén, Finnish experimental collective Kemialliset Ystävät have defied genre classification since their inception in the late 1990’s; their latest LP Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa is no different, fusing a potent blend of electronic and acoustic improvisation with a dynamic psychedelic edge.

More so than on any previous release, Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa, the group’s latest full-length, finds the unclassifiable Finnish collective working primarily with identifiably electronic sounds. The sonic palette and approach are reminiscent of collagists such as Ground Zero and Black Dice, where free-floating noise objects coalesce into loose, slushy grooves. More so than on any previous release, Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa, the group’s latest full-length, finds the unclassifiable Finnish collective working primarily with identifiably electronic sounds. Over the past two decades, Finnish experimental cooperative Kemialliset Ystävät have mesmerized and puzzled listeners with a varied string of CD, LP, cassette, and digital releases.

Ultimately, Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa is sui generis – the style is Kemialliset Ystävät’s alone. The result is an ironically whimsical experience. Alas would be the perfect soundtrack for a Hayao Miyazaki movie – images of Spirited Away and Porco Rosso filled my head, well before the oinking pig samples that come in at the end of the clap-led centerpiece Vettä Yarahille.

On Kemialliset Ystävät’s Alas Rattoisaa Virtaa, folk is one of the least relevant genre tags. Against the rush to identify musical patterns, artists rush in the opposite direction; while the hype-well of freak folk has long run dry, Kemialliset Ystävät continues to pour out an original sound. This is perhaps why critics are so keen to point out influences, progressions, hybrids, and reference points, even if they never take the next step: genres are becoming a unit of musical style.
