Long ago, Asmodeus sought to please Lucifer by freeing the Shedim as he believed that he could train and use them. However, since they were Hell's most savage creatures, even Lucifer feared the Shedim and subsequently locked them back up, and then scarred Asmodeus as punishment for disappointing him.

In Babylonian and Assyrian religions, Shedim was a generic name like the Hebrew and Christian word ‘spirit. The word possibly derives from the root meaning ‘to be violent. They were frequently portrayed as winged bulls that guarded the entrances to temples. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; so the land was polluted with bloodguilt. The Bereshith Rabba vii says they were created by God. God created their souls, but then the Sabbath came and He rested, so as a result, they remained disembodied. It is also said they were begotten by Adam during the period that he and Eve were separated after their transgression. Other texts claim that they were the offspring of Adam and Lilith.

One of these groups were the Shedim Lords, who were cast off into the harsh northern region of the newly shattered Atreia. There, they assembled their Daeva army and vowed to protect the shattered remains of the Tower of Eternity that rested on their lands. Dubbing this the Tower of Darkness, the Shedim believe that the weakness of the Seraphim demand for peace with the Balaur is what lead to their downfall. Azphel (Lord of Shadow). Essentially, melody is the key throughout these pleasantly arranged pieces, as Frisell makes his axe talk and cry while also partaking in lustrous unison lines with Don Byron (clarinet), Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), and Billy Drewes (alto sax).
