38 tracks compilation of classic funk and funky soul cuts spread across a broad stylistic spread. So many highlights with a mix of well known gems like Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘The Bottle’, Linda Clifford’s ‘Runaway Love’, Joe Quarterman’s ‘I Got So Much Troubl. and Leroy Hutson’s ‘Lucky Fellow’ to maybe lesser known cuts like the Continental Showstopper’s funky Northern ‘Not Too Young’ Alvin Cash’s frenetic ‘Keep On Dancin’ and Jodi Gayles’ sassy ‘You.

Firstly we turned up some unreleased monsters, notably the wonderful Betty Barney, who leads out the Pazant Brothers on a track from an amazing live album recorded in 1970 for which we've only just unearthed the tapes. The rest of the album will be out later in the year, and this is a worthy taster. Another of the unreleased cuts is by Lynn Varnado, who graces us with Staying At Home Like A Woman, and the rare Gator 45 Tell Me What's Wrong. As well as unreleased titles we have a bunch of cuts that have only appeared on soul comps put out by our sister label Kent.

Is it classic? No, although it's respectable woman-sung soul-funk from the late '60s and early '70s, mostly from small labels. The vocals are stirring and the arrangements tight, yet as often happens on anthologies of these sorts, truly compelling riffs and top-of-the-shelf songs aren't in abundance. It's obvious, too, that some of these performances were extremely influenced by bigger names such as Aretha Franklin, without matching the inspiration

Greg's applied his magic touch to the album opener Paint The Toon (renamed as 'Sister of Soul, Brothers of Funk') adding wobbling bass and shimmering cymbals to create a discotinged dancefloor belter that's set to be the sound of the summer. On the flip we've got the original version of 'Paint The Toon' (featuring a show-stopping vocal from Connie Lush) and 'Wanna Ride' - another album favourite which sees the band laying a grooving hip hop instrumental over which Yarah Bravo (One Self, BBE) drops her trademark quirky rhymes.
