Elizabeth Barrett Browning (née Moulton-Barrett, /ˈbraʊnɪŋ/; 6 March 1806 – 29 June 1861) was an English poet of the Victorian era, popular in Britain and the United States during her lifetime. Born in County Durham, the eldest of 12 children, Elizabeth Barrett wrote poetry from about the age of six. Her mother's collection of her poems forms one of the largest extant collections of juvenilia by any English writer.

The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934 film). The Barretts of Wimpole Street is a 1934 American film depicting the real-life romance between poets Elizabeth Barrett (Norma Shearer) and Robert Browning (Fredric March), despite the opposition of her father Edward Moulton-Barrett (Charles Laughton). The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Shearer was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Elizabeth Barrett's tyrannical father has forbidden any of his family to marry. Nevertheless, Elizabeth falls in love with the poet Robert Browning. Director: Sidney Franklin. The love story between Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett is legendary, and her 'Sonnets from the Portuguese' contains some of the beautiful love poetry ever written. They were both already established poets when they began corresponding, but she was an invalid, and had doubts and insecurities that he helped overcome with steady, persistent, genuine love. What I had forgotten about their story was how poorly her father behaved towards her and the rest of his children, and this movie really shows us that, in what appears to be a pretty accurate way.

Sonnets Portuguese: Sonnets from the Portuguese was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning between 1845 and 1846. It is a collection of forty-four love sonnets for her future husband Robert Browning. The love poems express doubt and fear. However, as the sonnets progress, it describes her love for Robert Browning and how she overcomes her inhibitions to love him fully and truly. In the beginning, she was not planning on publishing any of this. However, after Robert’s insistence, she published them in 1850.

Not to be confused with The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934 film). The Barretts of Wimpole Street. Directed by. Sidney Franklin. Flush by Virginia Woolf, a version of the courtship from the perspective of Elizabeth's dog, is also an imaginative reconstruction, though more closely based on reading the letters. Both the play and film reflect popular concerns at the time, particularly Freudian analysis  . The Courtship of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett, Daniel Karlin. Oxford University Press, 1987.

Fredric March behind the scenes of The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934). Jennifer Jones as poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1957). Period films were a dime a dozen in this era of history, but The Barretts of Wimpole Street is certainly one of the better ones. The costumes are straight up divine, as are the sets, and Norma Shearer and Fredric March, staples of the Oscars at this point, both deliver moving performances as starcrossed lovers. The father is super creepy though, and the undercurrent of his malice and possessiveness doesn’t always work.
