Before the Swedish duo returned for a third album, they delivered Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes, a title with great significance.

Koop are great! Koop remixed is OK but you must remember this CD is homemade. You should really get the "Islands" from Koop to really appreciate them. This album is a let down. I fell in love with "Waltz for Koop" and thought that because some nice artist were doing a remix that "Alternative Takes" would be even better. Well I have to say that I was disappointed with the album. One remix in particular "Modal Mile" was almost laughable( I have to admit I am laughing at it now). And that is awful, because I loved Earl Zinger's version on the original album.

Waltz for Koop - Alternative Takes. Koop, Markus Enochson. Release Date 2003-09-24. Label Playground Dance.

Though superficially this is an album of remixes, similar to that delivered by dozens of independent-minded dance or experimental bands, this record works on its own like few other remix albums ever have - and even rivals the quality of the original. Including one version of each track from Waltz for Koop, it evinces careful pacing and great work by an excellent cast of remixers

Talk about Koop. - Waltz For Koop. Alternative Takes.

Silvermaster
After the excellent Waltz for Koop, the talented duo comes up with Alternative Takes. D'Malicious mix of "Baby" immediately sets a positive tone with its smart rhythm and catchy guitar melody. The vocals are well integrated here, in sharp constrast to some of the other mixes, such as the Carlito remix of "Summer Sun". DJ Patife's mix is even worse, as if he randomly took some samples out of "Waltz For Koop" to loop a downright boring drum'n'bass-beat over them for about eight minutes. Nicola Conte disappoints too with his version of "Modal Mile", due to the straightforward jazz-noodling and predictable structure. Hird, on the other hand, changes the structure of "In a Heartbeat" and adds some great rhodes and drums, coming close to the beauty of the original. The dreamy mixes of "Bright Nights" and "Modal Mile" by Rima and 2 Banks of 4 respectively are great too, but the best two reinterpretations are the bouncy bass-driven "Relaxin' at Club F****n" by Richard Dorfmeister and Madrid de Los Austrias - with a gorgeous vibraphone contribution - and "Summer Sun" by Markus Enochson, featuring breathtaking instrumentation, funky broken beats and an awesome twist in the middle of the song. A decent remix-album overall.

WALTZ FOR KOOP (ALTERNATIVE TAKES) takes Koop's marvelous album and puts it through the remix machine, with good results overall. Nicola Conte's take of "Tonight," for instance, makes it speedier and more in line with Conte's own aesthetic. Refitting the waltz-rhythm lyrics into a strict 4/4 beat is troublesome, however, and the vocals seem a little off-kilter because of it (a problem that also plagues DJ Patlife's drum 'n' bass version of "Waltz for Koop"). Richard Dorfmeister and Madrid de Los Austrias house up "Relaxin' at Club F****n" even further, and Rima send "Bright Nights" into dubbed outer space. The standout on the album, however, is the Markus Enochson mix of "Summer Sun," which retains the bright, warm atmosphere and gives it a house kick drum. Perhaps it's a testament to the strength of the original that it can be so easily converted into a deep house club hit. Conversely, the 2 Banks of 4 mix of "Modal Mile" is somewhat bland, despite the addition of Valerie Etienne's considerable voice. A mixed bag, certainly, with quality taking the lead.
