The composers were Pierre Jalbert, Stacy Garrop of Evanston, Vivian Fung, Lita Grier of Chicago and Zhou Tian. In the spirit of "if you can't lick 'em, join 'em" Ricardo Lorenz (2001), Augusta Read Thomas (2002), Bobby McFerrin (2003) and Jennifer Higdon (2004) delivered a variety of short works. Another world premiere at the festival was Ned Rorem's song cycle, "Aftermath" in 2002, inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
