After reforming his band The English Rock Ensemble in 1980 and completing a European tour, Wakeman entered a recording deal with Charisma and began preparing material for a studio album. He decided on a concept album based on the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. The lyrics are by Tim Rice.

This show and tour I heard from a friend who saw rick play 1984 in south Africa in 1981 who told me and I quote UNREAL. The sound quality is quite good considering a 30 year old recording. His beautiful piano playing on the Yamaha CP 70 which I saw him play in 1985 on the Australian Tour was gorgeous to see and hear. The Yamaha cp70 had a beautiful sound still good to this day.
