The new album from Cory Hanson’s band Wand is its most focused, finessed, and best record to date. It contains an audacious refinement that transcends the group’s beginnings in the garage-rock scene. All of that returns on Plum, but Wand has folded those strains into single tunes, connecting an array of once-disjointed thoughts into strong, singular statements. The title track leaves no room for uncertainty in the shift: Over staccato piano, Hanson sings with newfound soul, belting blues of self-doubt over twin guitars that scrape and crawl like those of Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo.

Wand is an American psychedelic rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 2013. The band consists of Cory Hanson (vocals, guitar), Sofia Arreguin (synth, vocals), Robert Cody (guitar), Lee Landey (bass) and Evan Burrows (drums). The band has been prolific since their formation, releasing five albums in five years: Ganglion Reef (2014), Golem (2015), 1000 Days (2015), Plum (2017) and Laughing Matter (2019).

When Wand started working again it was with a couple major changes: they added two new members and shifted their band politics from dictatorship to democracy. In the past, Hanson had brought songs in and the other guys filled them in; now the bandmembers worked songs out together in their rehearsal space. Regardless of one's political inclinations, it's rare for a band to go from one person making all the calls to spreading the work around without it causing a major decline in quality.

Plum is where Wand peels back all the noise and starts experimenting with the songs themselves, and it's proved to be their most interesting and rewarding album yet. The songs on the album flow very well, and the shifting structures aren't always immediately evident because they remain catchy and easy to listen to while the band is experimenting. The twisting, dueling guitar work all across this album brings to mind some of the more beautiful passages from Radiohead's In Rainbows. Hanson's voice cuts right through the noise to deliver clear, catchy melodies.
