Shura Cherkassky (Russian: Александр (Шура) Исаакович Черкасский; 7 October 1909 – 27 December 1995) was an American classical pianist known for his performances of the romantic repertoire. His playing was characterized by a virtuoso technique and singing piano tone. For much of his later life, Cherkassky resided in London. Alexander Isaakovich Cherkassky (Shura is a diminutive form of Alexander) was born in Odessa, Ukraine (then part of the Russian Empire) in 1909

Shura Cherkassky Piano. Tchaikovsky: Piano Concertos No. and 3. Philharmonia Orchestra. Chopin, Brahms, Liszt & Mendelssohn: Piano Works. Shura Cherkassky in Concert (Live; Recorded 1971). Naxos featured album.

As Mr. Morrison points out in his notes, Shura Cherkassky came from a time where a pianist was equally important as the composer in the interpretation of a piece of music. This recital shows Mr. Cherkassky as a performer ever exploring the richness of music rather than offering a staid interpretation. The works are beautifully recorded with applause between selections. This CD is a must for lovers of Shura Cherkassky and is a perfect introduction to a remarkable pianist.
