The bluesy, distorted proto-punk riffs, careening drums, abrasive saxophone freak-outs establish the album's seedy, repulsive atmosphere while Iggy Pop offers up some of the most unhinged and animalistic vocal performances in rock history. The hectic, live feel of the album and insane displays of abrasive punk power makes The Stooges. 98. Funhouse is easily one of the loudest records ever made, there is so much power behind every single one of these tracks. The in-your-face style instrumental alongside Iggy Pop’s infamous shouts and screams make Funhouse.
Fun House is the second studio album by American rock band The Stooges. It was released on July 7, 1970 by Elektra Records. Though initially commercially unsuccessful, Fun House developed a strong cult following. Like its predecessor (1969's The Stooges) and its successor (1973's Raw Power), it is generally considered integral in the development of punk rock.
On (this 2 CD Deluxe version of) The Stooges Funhouse, you not only get the original Elektra Records album, but also the single mixes of the songs "Down on the Street" and "1970", also outtakes from the Funhouse sessions (produced by none other than Don Gallucci of Don & The Goodtimes and the Kingsmen) that will take you well over the to. It wasn't the first album by The Stooges, and some say it's not their best (see Raw Power). But this is the album that stands out for me in The Stooges catalog. Some might claim that the Velvet Underground's sonic assault on White Light/White Heat was the first proto-punk album, and you could make a case either way. But while the Velvets' secound album certainly captures the sound of electric mayhem, Fun House takes that Ur-energy and channels it for maximum effect.

The Stooges, ‘Funhouse’ (1970). The Stooges were the perfect embodiment of what music should be," said Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. On the Detroit band's second album (produced by Kingsmen keyboardist Don Gallucci), that meant primal garage chaos nearly a decade ahead of its time. Guitarist Ron Asheton hammered as few chords as possible (". Eye" is just one), while Iggy Pop channeled bad-trip psychedelia and metallic R&B into hormonal meltdowns that inspired generations of pent-up noise fiends.
out an early stand-off when Cale demanded they turn down their Marshalls (the band ultimately acceded, dialing their amps down from 10 to 9). A taste of how the two sides conflicted during the sessions for the Stooges can be heard in the original John Cale mix of No Fun, appended to the 2005 reissue of the album; the producer slows down. Elektra had enough faith to finance a second Stooges album, this time hooking the group up with producer Don Gallucci. Whereas Cale’s roots lay in avant garde composition, having worked with John Cage and La Monte Young before forming the Velvets, Gallucci’s qualifications for the job of wrangling the Stooges came in the form of his time as keyboardist with garage-rock pioneers the Kingsmen during the era when they recorded the ur-punk anthem Louie Louie.
