House on Hill may be a new recording, but the material is not. Virtually everything here was written, according to his liner notes - like Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau writes about himself best - in a session done in 2004 which yielded 18 songs with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy. The decision was made to split the sets into originals and covers. The covers became 2004's Anything Goes. There are nine cuts here, the remaining seven from 2004, and the other two come from a more recent session.

From 1994–2004, the Brad Mehldau Trio was composed of Larry Grenadier on bass, Jorge Rossy on drums, and Mehldau on piano. Jeff Ballard recently replaced Rossy, and House on Hill is the final recording from the previous group. Seven of its tracks come from a two-day session in 2002, when the trio recorded eighteen songs in total. That material was divided into Mehldau originals and interpretations of existing songs; the latter group became Anything Goes, released in 2004.

House on Hill is an album by American pianist and composer Brad Mehldau released on the Nonesuch label in 2006. The album was mainly recorded at the sessions which produced Anything Goes (2004) and is the first album entirely composed by Mehldau since Places (2000).

Recorded between 2002 and 2005, House On Hill is the final studio album by pianist Brad Mehldau's long-running original trio. Jorge Rossy, who was recently replaced by Jeff Ballard, occupied the drum chair in the group from 1994-2004. Revitalized by new blood, Mehldau's recent album with the revised lineup, Day Is Done (Nonesuch, 2005), was widely regarded as an artistic breakthrough, rendered distinctive by Ballard's impetuous rhythmic energy. On this departing album, Rossy demonstrates an equally valid but subtler approach

The final recording of pianist Brad Mehldau's trio before Jeff Ballard replaced long-serving original drummer Jorge Rossy. The music perhaps presses fewer ready-made buttons than Mehldau playing standards and pop classics does, where the reiteration of a familiar theme acts (as with Sonny Rollins) as a benchmark of this brilliant pianist's spontaneous imagination.
