Nonesuch Records released saxophonist Joshua Redman and pianist Brad Mehldau's Nearness, the longtime friends' and collaborators' first duo album, on September 9, 2016. The pair first reunited in 2010 when Redman was featured on Mehldau's album Highway Rider. In 2013, Mehldau was featured as a performer and producer on Redman's Walking Shadows.

Joshua Redman and Brad Mehldau’s playful spirit and deep knowledge of jazz result in some imaginative, respectful takes, as on the Parker/Harris classic Ornithology. By playing the familiar bebop theme on tenor sax instead of alto, Redman works new timbres into the tune, while Mehldau’s piano support is full of exciting extensions of the harmony and his solo offers glints of blues and classical counterpoint. Both are extraordinary, scintillating improvisers bursting with energy, yet they have great ears for one another.

Joshua Redman was born in Berkeley, California, to jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer and librarian Renee Shedroff. He was exposed to many kinds of music at the Center for World Music in Berkeley, where his mother studied South Indian dance. The same group of musicians made up the core on Redman's Elastic album, before becoming known as the Joshua Redman Elastic Band. Produced by Redman's friend and frequent collaborator Brad Mehldau, the album also features Larry Grenadier (bass) and Brian Blade (drums). It was released on May 7, 2013 on Nonesuch.
