Joshua Redman, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Scott Colley, and trumpeter Ron Miles, whose new album, Still Dreaming, was released on Nonesuch Records in May, performed songs from the album and more at last year's Jazz in Marciac festival. Employing an all new group consisting of pianist Aaron Goldberg, bass player Reuben Rogers, and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, he presents an album of original tunes to follow Timeless Tales (For Changing Times), an album of cover material. Eschewing the pat jazz formula of a head followed by improvisations, he adopts a more free-flowing structure for his compositions in which anyone can start and the tune can develop in an open-ended fashion.

On Beyond, Joshua Redman unveils ten originals that are both compelling in their complexity (including odd time signatures and polymetric structures) and alluring in their unadorned beauty (from catchy grooves to indelible melodies). His quartet delivers upbeat tunes that burst with dynamics, gently swinging numbers with reflective interludes, and lyrical gems teeming with passion.

Beyond marks his emergence as a fully mature artist. The album includes some of Redman's strongest playing-the gorgeous ballad "Neverend," the slow-building tenor exchange with longtime friend Mark Turner on "Leap of Faith," the tongue-in-cheek grave dance on "Last Rites of Rock 'n' Roll. It also includes some of his most ambitious writing-the 13/4 time signature on "Courage," the 9/4 "Lopsided Lullaby," the 10/4 "Suspended Emanations

Joshua Redman’s first album on Nonesuch was the Grammy-nominated Momentum (2005). His other releases on the label include Back East, Compass, and Trios Live, all of which explore the trio format; MoodSwing (1994, re-issued); Walking Shadows (2013), his first recording to include an orchestral ensemble; The Bad Plus Joshua Redman (2015), a collaboration with the acclaimed trio; Nearness (2016), a duo album with longtime friend. Redman currently tours with his trio with Rogers and Hutchinson; his quartet; Still Dreaming, with Ron Miles, Scott Colley and Brian Blade; and occasionally with the collaborative group James Farm, with Aaron Parks, Matt Penman, and Eric Harland.
