The band consists of Melvins' Buzz Osborne (guitar) and Dale Crover (drums), alongside Le Butcherettes' Teri Gender Bender (vocals) and Omar Rodríguez-López (bass) of At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, Antemasque fame. The album was reportedly written and recorded in a week, with a fluid and spontaneous process. Osborne and Crover would be in one room working on riffs. Rodríguez-López would be in another working on bass lines, and Suárez would be in another, creating lyrics for demos that had just been tracked

Crystal Fairy is not a hopeful or happy album. Its strength comes from the paranoia and anxiety of Gender Bender’s lyrics and felt in the dark mood of the melodies. The title track introduces a catchy groove that fits well with the singer’s vocal tone and carries the song through. It’s a lonely world, and if Gender Bender’s lyrics occasionally deviate from that message as in Drugs on the Bus and Vampire X-Mas to sink into fantasy, Osborne, Crover, and Rodríguez-López remain to provide the album’s persistent, foreboding melodies.
