There have been teasers. First there was a 2006 press release issued by the Avalanches' record label Modular that stated in no uncertain terms that they’ve made the record of their lives basically. The Avalanches were eventually snapped up by Sydney promoter Stephen Pav Pavlovic and his new imprint Modular Recordings around the time Since I Left You began taking shape. Cross – who makes alt-country records these days as part of the duo Jep and Dep – first heard the album in the late 1990s at Chater’s house in Fitzroy. I knew it was going to be massive, just taking the DJ Shadow thing and going fucking completely Jackson Pollock with it, he recalls.

Like recklessly riding your BMX or skipping rope after downing a sugar-laced pitcher of lemonade, the un-mawkish Since I Left You thrives on making you feel youthful and mighty. Its Utopian grove stand bric-a-brac of grooves, beats, flutters, whistles, oohs-and-yeahs, and sundry animal noises can alternately sound familiar and fresh. Some origins can be immediately placed, and those that can't trigger an impulse that you've heard it somewhere before

Fun, playful, fast and hypnotically bizarre, this is a must have for fans of quirky music. although their style is more in the vein of funky Breaks or Alternative Dance music, they very cleverly lifted samples from various 70's artists.

The Avalanches spent the next three years perfecting Since I Left You, and the extensive amount of time paid to the creation of this album certainly paid off as this is an amazing 60-minute experience. That's right, I said it, an experience. During the time working on Since I Left You, the Avalanches put on an outlandish live show, and played with the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy. But while those groups rely heavily on lyrical content, the Avalanches rely heavily on samples repeated over and over in various catchy, infectious ways
