Dance to the Music is the second studio album by funk/soul band Sly and the Family Stone, released April 27, 1968 on Epic/CBS Records. It contains the Top Ten hit single of the same name, which was influential in the formation and popularization of the musical subgenre of psychedelic soul and helped lay the groundwork for the development of funk music.

The title track off their 1968 sophomore album, this song was the Family Stone’s big breakthrough-it rose to Drummer Greg Errico remembers that they were deliberately aiming for a big hit with this song so that they could do other things later. He told Rolling Stone: We had pressure from CBS to write a hit, so Sly said, ‘Well, OK, we’ve got to capture the audience and get them to listen. Then we can get more sophisticated and more political. This song was also a showcase for the different elements going on in the band

During the recording of Dance to the Music," Rose Stone (keyboards/vocals) joined the group. While the single blew up, the same-titled album only did moderately well, as the second single released from the record, Life, flopped. But the success of Dance to the Music prompted the group to embark on their first overseas tour in England. Later in ’68, the Family Stone returned to the studio and recorded and released Everyday People, which would become their first chart-topper. While Sly was releasing solo material for Atlantic, his band was still with Epic, and in 1971, they released Family Affair, which was a darker single than their previous releases. Family Affair became their third chart-topper and was the lead single for their third LP, There’s a Riot Goin’ On, which was steeped in dark instrumentation, drum machines, and hopeless lyrics.

Sly & the Family Stone drummer Greg Errico recalled the story to Uncut: "Most of our stuff in those days came together over time. It wasn't a preconceived thing. Cutting the track, we got the strong beat that everyone could log onto, then it came together in layers. On 'Dance to the Music, there's a little part that Jerry does with the soprano sax. It came right at the final stages. We were playing the track back over the studio speakers in the control room, really loud, and Jerry grabs his soprano and starts playing that line.
