Three years after Tomasz Stanko's New York Quartet issued their quietly stunning debut Wisława, they return in slightly altered but no less inventive form. The Polish trumpeter brings back pianist David Virelles and drummer Gerald Cleaver, and welcomes new bassist Reuben Rogers, who replaces Thomas Morgan.

Stańko's New York Quartet includes ECM artists David Virelles, whose Mbókò (2016) and Antenna (2016), amassed high praise, and Gerald Cleaver who has appeared on a number of the label's releases including those of Michael Formanek, Tim Berne, Roscoe Mitchell and Miroslav Vitous. Both were part of Stańko's Wisława project while bassist Thomas Morgan has been replaced by Reuben Rogers. That mind-set works well in making his more visionary arrangements pop in the context of an entire album. December Avenue is strikingly balanced and tastefully performed by this well synergized quartet. Stanko’s New York Quartet is among his most exciting projects. His initial thought was that a New York retreat would be an ideal space to soak up inspiration and write new music, but it was not long before he was interacting with some of the most gifted and creative players on the scene  . December Avenue is Tomasz Stanko’s 12th album as a leader on ECM. The first of them Balladyna, recorded in 1975, established him as a major force in European jazz.

Four years after the landmark album Wisława, the great Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko’s New York Quartet returns with another masterful recording, December Avenue. Always an insightful bandleader, Stanko here encourages spirited improvisation to flower around his characteristically melancholic and soulful themes, and all players are presented to best advantage. December Avenue was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in June 2016 and produced by Manfred Eicher.
