Still, success eluded the Isleys, and only after they left RCA in 1962 did they again have another hit, this time with their seminal cover of the Top Notes' "Twist and Shout. While the Isleys' popularity continued into the 1980s, Ernie and Marvin, along with Chris Jasper, defected in 1984 to form their own group, Isley Jasper Isley; a year later, they topped the R&B charts with "Caravan of Love. On March 31, 1986, O'Kelly died of a heart attack; Rudolph soon left to join the ministry, but the group reunited in 1990.

By 1975, the Isley Brothers were a roll. The group–consisting of Ronald, Rudolph and O’Kelly Isley, with the addition of younger brothers Marvin and Ernie Isley and brother-in-law Chris Japser in 1973, became a self-contained unit scoring hit after hit. The majority of the group’s albums between 1973 and 1983 went either gold or platinum and their singles and album tracks were played constantly on the radio, clubs, discos, house parties, jukeboxes, and bedrooms across the country. They began recording this album almost immediately after they finished the completion of their 1974 smash album Live It Up. The Heat Is On contains six tunes all together and, in the group’s trademark fashion, they were lengthy but danceable and listenable. The tunes on side one–all of which are labeled Parts 1 & 2 next to the titles–are all uptempo hard funk, while side two are all smooth silky soul.

Live! is a 1993 live album by The Isley Brothers on Elektra Records. Their final Warner album, the Isleys sung all of their classic hits including "It's Your Thing", "That Lady", "Between the Sheets", "Voyage to Atlantis", "Shout", "Take Me to the Next Phase", "Fight the Power" and "For the Love of You". Smooth Sailin' Tonight". Take Me to the Next Phase".

The Isleys Live is one of the finest funk/soul live albums ever recorded. The first eight tracks come from club gigs in 1971 and 1972, while the last three are from a 1969 show at Yankee Stadium. The group's biggest and most identifiable hit, "It's Your Thing," is featured twice, each version extremely inspired. The album is also a showcase for the talents of the woefully underrated guitarist Ernie Isley, who simply wails on a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," and plays fantastically throughout. The Isleys Live received the makeover treatment in 1996 by Rhino Records, who remastered the whole disc and lengthened it with several extra selections not included on the original.
