Latest Outlook - the new Stryker, Slagle Band CD, is a musical portrait of how we see the world in the present tense. After last year’s Live at the Jazz Standard (ZOHO ZM 200509), Steve and I had a batch of new music that we were ready to record. Bassist Jay Anderson had been recording some excellent sounding CD’s at his studio in New Paltz, NY, so we decided to head up there and put down some tracks. I’ve known Joe since I moved to New York City in the early 80’s when we used to play some loft jam sessions. Steve and Joe go back even further meeting at Berklee when they were 19 in the early 70’s. Later they played with Woody Herman, and The Carla Bley Band together, and nowadays Steve plays alto in the Joe Lovano Nonet, which has released 3 CD’s on Blue Note.

The Stryker-Slagle Band, a pianoless quartet co-led by guitarist Dave Stryker and altoist Steve Slagle, features top-notch musicianship, logical yet unpredictable solos, close communication between the four players (who include bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Billy Hart) and an appealing group sound. What makes Latest Outlook and the band in general something special is the high quality of the original compositions. Each song has its own personality and surprises, often being episodic  . Latest Outlook is a fine example of early 21st century jazz.

Latest Outlook is the quartet's third disc (each with a different rhythm team), and it deserves to break out into the open. This is fresh, intelligent modern jazz that captures the sweet spot of the art - engaging composition, adventurous improvisation, and inspiring group interaction. Neither avant-garde nor strictly mainstream, this recording could inspire any jazz fan to think twice about letting any more Stryker or Slagle product go ignored. Both players are, at core, hard boppers who came of age in a post-Ornette world. With Slagle on soprano and Stryker on strummy acoustic guitar, the band goes into a pop groove beneath a melody articulated in unison by saxophone and bass. Nevertheless, the song takes off more than pleasantly, with the piquant folk melody giving Hart a nice foil for his accents and temperature-raising fills.
