Fiedel - Berghain 08 The official mix has been on life support for years, but Ostgut Ton has done more than most to keep it alive. Along with fabric and DJ-Kicks, the Berghain and Panorama Bar series weathered the death of the CD, a format now unplayable for most listeners, and remained relevant amidst an ever-rising tide of podcasts. Like podcasts, Berghain and Panorama Bar mixes are now released for free online, and can go as long as they need to. But like mix CDs, they include only music that has been properly licensed-that is, music the label has legal permission to use in the mix, an obligation most podcasts ignore-and are released with all the pomp and circumstance of an album. This balancing act worked well on Ryan Elliott's Panorama Bar 06 and Function's Berghain 07. It's less successful on Ostgut Ton's latest mix, Berghain 08, mixed by Fiedel.

Both the Berghain 09 mix and accompanying exclusive 12's - featuring exclusive tracks by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Virile Games, Los Angeles Death Cult, Ron Morelli, Volvox, JK Flesh, Alberich, Ugandan Methods Prurient and Merzbow - reflect Vatican Shadow's composite musical influences and relationship to Berghain as a club. Berghain 09 is a tribute to the techno mixtapes that influenced me during my introduction to raves and dance music in the 90.

referencing Berghain 02, CD, Comp, Mixed, OSTGUTCD05. Definitely one of my favourite Techno mix CD's with many different styles and certainly not dominated by pounding 4/4 tunes. The Jacking Zone does however spoil it just a little for me but I'm all for DJ's dropping in the unexpected or quirky tune. a DJ set that changed my life. A wonderful example on how a DJ can adhere to a particular philosophy but cover many styles in a single set.
