Disc: 1. 1. Symphony No. 2 in C minor ('Resurrection'): Part One. I. Allegro maestoso. 2. II. Andante moderato. 3. III. In sehr ruhig fliessender Bewegung. Disc: 2. 2 in C minor ('Resurrection'): Part Two. IV. 'Urlicht:' Sehr feierlich, aber schlicht.

He elicits sumptuous playing from the St. Louis Symphony, gorgeous singing from Kathleen Battle and Maureen Forrester, and glorious singing from the St. Louis Symphony Chorus under Thomas Peck. But he does not believe. The terror and longing of the opening Allegro maestoso are hysterical histrionics.

Symphony No. 2 by Gustav Mahler, known as the Resurrection Symphony, was written between 1888 and 1894, and first performed in 1895. This symphony was one of Mahler's most popular and successful works during his lifetime. It was his first major work that established his lifelong view of the beauty of afterlife and resurrection. In this large work, the composer further developed the creativity of "sound of the distance" and creating a "world of its own", aspects already seen in his First Symphony
