Across his 15-year career he has moved through shades of reflective electronic noise, experiential sound design, and modern composition with a deft and distinguished touch.

Konoyo is the ninth studio album by Canadian electronic music musician Tim Hecker, released on September 28, 2018 on Kranky and Sunblind Music. A majority of the album was made from Hecker's visits to Japan, where he worked with a gagaku ensemble, Tokyo Gakuso, in Jiunzan Mandala-Temple Kanzouin on the outskirts of Tokyo. Konoyo received critical acclaim upon its release.

Encouraged by the late Jóhannsson to consider pulling back both volume and layers, Hecker creates a fascinating dialogue between his technology and some of the world’s most ancient instruments.

Konoyo', Tim Hecker’s ninth album, is a balanced, thoughtful record that can feel at points both joyous and suffocating. Among Tim Hecker's least direct efforts, Konoyo at its best is sonically and conceptually rich thanks to contributions from gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso. Unfortunately, the sound-play is lacking on a few of the pieces.

Tim Hecker recorded most of Konoyo in Japan, working with members of the gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso, who play a variety of traditional wind and percussion instruments. Hecker does similar business with the gagaku ensemble on Konoyo, sometimes rendering the source material nearly unrecognizable, letting it seep through the mix in subtle ways.

I think the album is very well described by it's cover: appealing shapes and colors that at first seem cohesive, but upon closer inspection it's hard to piece together what is actually there. It may serve as a metaphor for Gagaku music itself which I've read is made intentionally discordant and harsh to further the Japanese commoners idea that the Imperials' are on another level of taste and comprehension.

Of late, Tim Hecker’s music, perhaps more than any other ambient artist, has carried with it a sense of definite progression and purpose throughout each piece he’s released. Not content to meander aimlessly in gorgeous soundscapes, he meticulously builds his cathedrals of sound from minimal elements, working each piece into a clearly formed vision, his aural textures constantly developing and shifting with a clear sense of progression.
