Of the two albums, Al & Sandy was itself the follow-up to Sandy Brown's epochal McJazz set (albeit with an entirely new backing band), while Al's Pals follows Fairweather's adventures as a mainstream arranger, and loses some of its predecessor's magic accordingly. Nevertheless, the presence of Kenny Ball, Jack Fallon, Joe Harriott, and Cliff Townsend (not to mention Sandy Brown) among Fairweather's sidemen ensures that the musicianship remains peerless and, if time has done this album few favors, at least Meek's presence on this CD will ensure it gets another.

To many musicians Sandy Brown was Britain's most original jazz voice. He died in 1975 at the age of 46, and was named as the finest living clarinet player by several of the American musicians he encountered. Alyn Shipton illuminates the life of this most individual musician with readings from Brown's collected writings The Mcjazz Manuscripts.
