Pampered Menial is the debut album by American progressive rock/AOR band Pavlov's Dog, released in 1975. The album features a line-up comprising David Surkamp, Steve Scorfina, Mike Safron, Rick Stockton, David Hamilton, Doug Rayburn and Siegfried Carver (born Richard Nadler). Carver left the band soon after the album was released. It was first released on ABC Records, debuting on the charts in early April.
Pampered Menial was the first album from Pavlov's Dog and was released in 1974. A difficult album to categorise, the songs are melodic and tastefully played and arranged. Elements of Symphonic Prog are present and the occasional more riffy moment. But if you can cope with Surkamp, here's an entire CD of passionate, mellotron-drenched and guitar-driven sympho, which will remind you, at times, of early Crimso, of Jethro Tull at their most autumnal, and even of Genesis' "Mad Man Moon". Hard to believe that even on their debut album Pavlov's Dog sounded so together and reached such peaks - something they'd never achieve again. As early as their second album, there was to be a disastrous falling-off in quality.
Pampered Menial was the first album from Pavlov's Dog, a band produced by Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman, the duo behind Blue Oyster Cult. The seven men in this group are revealed in the gatefold holding "Horace," a dog, while three engravings from 1849 by artist Robert Vernon make up the front, back and inside cover
The closest these bands got was Leftoverture by Kansas but the album still had some notorious flaws. Probably the only example of an album that blended these different styles in the right way was 1974's Pampered Menial by Pavlov's Dog. Formed in 1972 in St. Louis, Pavlov's Dog is probably the best example of a band that you'll either hate or love, not only because of their pop style in the prog world but mainly because of its vocalist: David Surkamp.
Pavlov's Dog is a 1970s progressive rock/AOR band formed in St. Louis, Missouri in 1972. Pavlov's Dog originally was composed of vocalist David Surkamp, guitarist Steve Levin, keyboardists David Hamilton and Doug Rayburn, bassist Rick Stockton, drummer Mike Safron, and violinist Siegfried Carver (born Richard Nadler). Levin left the band during their inaugural year and was replaced by Steve Scorfina (formerly of REO Speedwagon).
