As with their prior release Check Your Head, this album continues the band's trend away from sampling and towards live instruments

Ill Communication follows the blueprint of Check Your Head, accentuating it at some points, deepening it in others, but never expanding it beyond the boundaries of that record. As such, it's the first Beastie Boys album not to delve into new territory, but it's not fair to say that it finds the band coasting, since much of the album finds the group turning in muscular, vigorous music that fills out the black-and-white sketches that comprised Check Your Head

Neither the Beastie Boys nor anyone from their camp informed me of the use of my voice in the track, and nor did they ask permission. The Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group from New York City formed in 1981. The group comprised Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass) and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar). The Beastie Boys were formed as a four-piece hardcore punk band, the Young Aborigines, in 1979 by Mike D (vocals), MCA (bass), John Berry (guitar) and Kate Schellenbach (drums)

Beastie Boys' Ill Communication is a potent mixture of '70s kung fu flicks, lofi skate tapes, Miles Davis, Bad Brains, and cheap weed. There’s a heartbeat of hardcore throughout the Beastie Boys; even on Sabotage, you can hear the influence on three guys who cut their teeth on bands like Fear and Black Flag. Tracks like Heart Attack Man and Tough Guy showcase the Beastie Boys’ ability to hammer out a few songs with that old zest. However, the real standout moments throughout Ill Communication are the groove-soaked interludes like Sabrosa and Futterman’s Rule while Eugene’s Lament is otherworldly and feels straight from the dark shadows of a David Lynch film.
