The Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47, by Dmitri Shostakovich is a work for orchestra composed between April and July 1937. Its first performance was on November 21, 1937, in Leningrad by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky. The premiere was a huge success and received an ovation that lasted well over half an hour. The symphony is approximately 45 minutes in length and has four movements: Moderato - Allegro non troppo.

Here the renowned German orchestra has recorded the fifth symphonies of each composer which are among the greatest symphonies ever written  . A work that the orchestra and conductor will have performed countless times there is never any sense of routine, clearly lavishing great care and attention on this Beethoven score.

The strings’ vehement opening volleys feel oddly nonchalant here and this air of emotional detachment permeates the sluggish first movement – sample, say, the listless ostinato accompaniment at 4'12". The Scherzo has more pep, thankfully, but precious little bite; as in the Beethoven, Sanderling has smoothed out the music’s jagged angles.
