Four for Trane is a studio album by Archie Shepp released on Impulse! Records in 1964. Four of the five tracks are reworkings of pieces originally recorded on John Coltrane's 1960 Giant Steps and Coltrane Plays the Blues, rearranged by Shepp and Roswell Rudd. Coltrane himself co-produced the album alongside Bob Thiele

Recorded at "Newport Jazz Festival", Newport, RI, July 2, 1965. Bobby Hutcherson appears courtesy Blue Note Records. Original release has fully laminated gatefold cover. Honestly, to put John Coltrane's name first as well as his picture on the front cover when he's featured only on one track - which is not even memorable - while Archie Shepp is actually performing four intense tracks, is a farce. With all due respect to Impulse Records that I deeply love. Reply Notify me 2 Helpful.

New Thing at Newport is a 1965 live album featuring two separate sets from that year's Newport Jazz Festival by tenor saxophonists John Coltrane and Archie Shepp. Side One. Spoken introduction to John Coltrane's set by Father Norman O'Connor - 1:08. One Down One Up" - 12:28 (from Coltrane's set). Rufus (Swung His Face at Last to the Wind, Then His Neck Snapped)" - 4:58 (from Shepp's set). Side Two (from Shepp's set). Le Matin des Noire" - 7:39. Call Me by My Rightful Name" - 6:19.

New Thing at Newport. New Thing At Newport. But this is really Archie Shepp's album. With vibes player Bobby Hutcherson on board, Shepp does a chilling set about the racial uphevil of the era. "Rufus" is a musical paiting of a lynching (the subtitle includes "and his neck snapped," while "Tracks" is a dark exposure of herion addiction.

After Coltrane and crew have sufficiently anointed the Newport crowd in a monsoon of New Thing sentiments it’s Shepp’s turn. His set is a different bag, brimming with political overtones and barely contained dysphoria and his sound on tenor is an arresting amalgam of raspy coarseness and delicate lyricism. Also included for the first time is a beautiful facsimile of the Shepp album cover picturing the saxophonist with song charts and horn. The classic John Coltrane Quartet made one of its final appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1965. It's apparent the saxophonist wasn't getting the sound he wanted and by the end of the year he would take a different direction, hiring Pharoah Sanders and wife Alice Coltrane for the band
