This is an exciting album. The important tenor Archie Shepp and his 1967 group - with both Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombones, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Beaver Harris - romp through the continuous "One for the Trane" before an enthusiastic audience at a German music festival. Although he improvises very freely and with great intensity, Shepp surprised the crowd by suddenly bursting into a spaced-out version of "The Shadow of Your Smile" near the end of this memorable performance.

Shepp's performance at the Donaueschingen Music Festival was part of a 'SWF-Jazz-Session', the Jazz Concert Series of Südwestfunk Baden-Baden (South-Western German Radio and TV Network). Notes

French issue of Archie Shepp - Life At The Donaueschingen Music Festival (SABA SB 15 148) LP.

Recorded live at the "Donaueschingen Musiktage 1967", October 21st, 1967.

"Mr. Shepp's performance at the Donaueschingen Music Festival was part of a 'SWF-Jazz-Session', the Jazz Concert Series of Südwestfunk Baden-Baden (South-Western German Radio and TV Network)."

Labels read "The Archie Shepp Group".

Gatefold sleeve.

Most likely 1971 release, but could also still be 1969-1970. MPS took over from SABA in 1968, original is from 1967. Shepp, being big in France, would have been released very soon after original Saba. Also the sleeve with strong inside lamination of the gatefold cover points to late 1960's still. Original German sleeve is similar to German 1971 release.
