Satie: L'Oeuvre Pour Piano. Pianist Aldo Ciccolini garnered lots of attention in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he recorded all of Erik Satie's original piano music for EMI. The cycle remains first choice for Satie fans, who certainly will welcome its first complete (as opposed to excerpted) reissue on CD. Ciccolini's interpretations are paradigms of expressive economy and directness, and happily eschew the "let's see how slow and important I can make these works" attitude that sometimes prevails among younger Satie practitioners.

Recorded ca. 1984, these are Satie's piano works for 2-hands. Armengaud also contributed with D. Merlet to a disc of the works for piano 4-hands Satie: Complete Works for Piano Duet, and was accompanist on a recording the the 'complete' songs Satie 'Melodies And Songs: Complete Recording Including Hitherto Unpublished Works'. Anne-Sop (I find these other two discs to be more well done than this 4-cd set of the 2-handed works). Another, generally very good, series was recorded about the same time by France Clidat Erik Satie: Complete Pianoworks by France Clidat which has somewhat better sound, but not really a complete series, a few major items as missing. I recommend the Ciccolini, which is also closer to being a "complete" collection.

The Pièces froides (Cold Pieces) are two sets of piano pieces composed in March 1897 by Erik Satie. Unpublished until 1912, they marked Satie's break from the mystical-religious music of his "Rosicrucian" period (1891–95), and were a harbinger of his humoristic piano suites of the 1910s.
