Give Ireland Back to the Irish" is a song by the British–American rock band Wings that was released as their debut single in February 1972. It was written by Paul McCartney and his wife Linda in response to the events of Bloody Sunday, on 30 January that year, when British troops in Northern Ireland shot dead thirteen civil rights protestors. Keen to voice their outrage at the killings, Wings recorded the track two days later at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Wings, formed in 1971 by McCartney and Linda, also included guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Denny Seiwell and Northern Irish guitarist Henry McCullough. They all agreed the song was worth recording and releasing – and they were ready for the backlash, which began almost immediately. In his 2002 memoir Wingspan McCartney recalled: I wrote ‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish,’ we recorded it and I was promptly phoned by the chairman of EMI, explaining that they wouldn’t release it. He thought it was too inflammatory.

On 7 March, Wings were filmed rehearsing Give Ireland Back to the Irish at the McCartneys’ St John’s Wood home in London for a segment on ABC News in the United States. The single reached number 1 in Ireland and in Spain. McCartney attributed the song’s success in Spain to its popularity among Basque separatists. The A-side was included as a bonus track on the 1993 Paul McCartney Collection CD reissue of Wild Life. Last updated on October 29, 2018.

Great Britain and all the people Say that all people must be free Meanwhile back in Ireland There's a man who looks like me. And he dreams of God and country And he's feeling really bad And he's sitting in a prison Should he lie down do nothing Should give in or go mad. Give Ireland back to the Irish Don't make them have to take it away Give Ireland back to the Irish Make Ireland Irish today. Spin It On" Back to the Egg (Wings, 1979) Although Back to the Egg cracked Billboard's Top 10 in 1979, it took a minor beating from critics, something McCartney still mentions in interviews. But "Spin It On," an unassuming little album track that clocks in at 2:13, is one of the album's hidden highlights. It features some superlative playing by Wings' two newest members, drummer Steve Holley and guitarist Laurence Juber, who's now considered an acoustic fingerstyle master (probably because he is!).
