Harp making has been a profession in Ireland for over a millennium. With the exception of the Dalway or Fitzgerald harp made in 1621 by Donnchadh Fitz Teigh, (2) the Downhill harp, created by Cormac O' Kelly in 1702 and owned by Denis Hempson, (3) and the Bunworth harp produced by John Kelly, little information is extant about harp makers or their profession

The harp is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world and also the national emblem of Ireland. It is believed the harp was introduced to pre-Christian Europe by the Phoenicians who brought it over from Egypt as one of their international trading goods. The oldest surviving Celtic harps date back to the 15th century but the music of the harp has been an important emblem to Ireland since the 10th century. Spirit of the country. In the days of the old chieftains harpists were held in high regard. It was almost 200 years before the music of the harp was freely enjoyed in Ireland once again. In 1792, a festival was set up in an attempt to bring back the almost extinct tradition of the harp. Only 10 harpists attended.

The Irish Rover Lyrics. In the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and six We set sail from the cold cove of Cork We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks For the grand City Hall in New York She was a wonderful craft, she was rigged 'fore and aft And lord how the trade winds drove her She had twenty-three masts, and she stood. several blasts And they called her the Irish Rover
