The Rite of Spring (French: Le Sacre du printemps; Russian: Весна священная, romanized: Vesna svyashchennaya, lit. 'sacred spring') is a ballet and orchestral concert work by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Vaslav Nijinsky with stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. The celebration of spring begins in the hills. An old woman enters and begins to foretell the future. Young girls arrive from the river, in single file.

To celebrate the centennial of the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ground-breaking ballet, Le Sacre du printemps, Sony reissued several historic recordings in 2013, perhaps most notably the performances the composer conducted with the y Orchestra of New York (later the New York Philharmonic) in 1940, and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in 1960. This deluxe package presents those analog recordings in digital remasterings, along with the suite from The Firebird, which Stravinsky recorded in 1967 with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra

In his attempt to continue to represent his fascination with Slavic folklore, Igor Stravinsky premiered his third successive ballet, Le Sacre du printemps (more commonly referred by its English translation The Rite of Spring ) in the late spring of 1913. Like The Firebird and Petrushka ballets before it, Rite is founded upon the neoclassical terrain that was still fairly early in formation during the early part of the 20th century.

Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky (Russian: Игорь Фёдорович Стравинский) (17th June 1882 – 6th April 1971) was a Russian composer who first achieved international fame with three ballets commissioned by the impresario Serge Diaghilev and performed by Diaghilev's Ballets Russes (Russian Ballet): L'Oiseau de feu ("The Firebird") (1910), Petrushka (1911), and Le. sacre du printemps ("The Rite of Spring") (1913). Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity

It was exactly a century ago Igor Stravinsky s Le Sacre du Printemps shocked and overwhelmed its first audience, provoking a now-legendary riot at its Paris premiere whose notoriety and magnitude were unprecedented in the history of classical music. The opening-night audience included, among the ladies, gentlemen and diplomats, such luminaries as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein, Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy.
