The Firebird is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with a scenario by Alexandre Benois and Fokine based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner. When first performed at the Opéra de Paris on 25 June 1910, the work was an instant success with both audience and critics.

This double CD by Dennis Russell Davies and the Sinfonieorchester Basel presents the full orchestral version on the first disc, and a transcription for piano four hands on the other, prepared by Davies from Stravinsky's solo piano arrangement, which was used primarily for ballet rehearsals, in spite of being almost impossible for one person to play.

L'Oiseau de feu was a commissioned work by Sergei Pavlovich Djagilev for the Ballets Russes, with which was to be built on the success achieved in 1909 by the company in Paris.
