Carnaval, Op. 9 (1834) is one of Schumann's most characteristic piano works. After a long and acrimonious legal battle with her father, Schumann married Clara Wieck on 12 September 1840, at Schönefeld, the day before her 21st birthday. Had they waited another day, they would no longer have required her father's consent.
