Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is a band from Cotonou, Benin which plays afrobeat, funk, soukous and other styles, often based on Vodun rhythms. The group is sometimes referred to as "Tout Puissant" (French for "All Mighty") Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou first formed by bandleader Clément Mélomé in 1968 under the name "Orchestre Poly-Disco" in the coastal town of Cotonou, Benin. Their debut album was originally released in 1973

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo practiced what it preached: vodoun. Formed in the late 1960s from the cradle of black magic – Cotonou, Benin – the West African ensemble fused hypnotic rhythms of traditional spirit possession ceremonies with the needlepoint efficacy of James Brown soul, Nigerian high life, and trans-Atlantic grooves. Despite recording more than 50 albums and twice as many singles, geographic limitations and financial difficulties under the country's Marxist dictatorship stunted Orchestre's rightful legacy.

BY Le Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. The greatest band in Benin’s history, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, is back. After a year of illustrious comeback live dates including New York’s Lincoln Center, WOMAD festival and Barbican London, the band releases its first studio album in over twenty years, ‘Cotonou Club’, on Strut, Sons D’Ailleurs in March 2011. Produced in Paris entirely on vintage analogue studio equipment, this new album refreshes Poly-Rythmo classics such as ‘Gbeti Madjro’ (featuring Angelique Kidjo) alongside a firing selection of brand new compositions.

That’s the story of Benin’s Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, a group born during the West African advent of funk and soul in the 1960s and 70s. Though legendary back in the day and long sought after by crate diggers and vintage African pop fans in the West, the band had never played outside of Africa until 2009. Their music-highlighted beautifully on their first album Club Cotonou (Sons d'ailleurs, 2011)-begs the question why. With a history that reflects the midcentury exuberance of African independence and the worldwide revelation of Afrobeat and African funk, this ten-member group has transformed the reverberations caused by artists like James Brown and incorporated potent local elements to create precise, high-powered songs. Le légendaire Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo et son éternelle jeunesse font partie de ces trésors cachés enfin révélés pour le meilleur !

Based in Benin’s seaside city of Cotonou, Orchestre Poly-Rythmo are the most recent great West African band to make a post-millennial comeback. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo’s heyday was the 1970s, as their funk, soul and Afrobeat influences underline. However, a combination of economic and political factors, management issues, the death of key members and bad luck meant this once-prolific band effectively stopped recording in 1983, and only rarely performed afterwards.
