Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou is a band from Cotonou, Benin which plays afrobeat, funk, soukous and other styles, often based on Vodun rhythms. The group is sometimes referred to as "Tout Puissant" (French for "All Mighty") Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou first formed by bandleader Clément Mélomé in 1968 under the name "Orchestre Poly-Disco" in the coastal town of Cotonou, Benin. Their debut album was originally released in 1973

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou hails from the West African nation of Benin. stands for the French "Tout Puissant", which means "All Mighty". The band was formed in 1966 and still records to this day, although band members have changed along the way. Their output has been extremely prolific numbering upwards of 50 LPs and a hundred 45s. As their name implies, the music relies on a blend of rhythmic persussive elements. It draws from the French heritage of Benin along with the influence of their anglophone neighbors like Nigeria and Ghana.

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo. The 10 musicians came on stage chanting, dressed in matching white and red uniforms, then launched into a tight, confident set that justified their role as the latest lineup of one of west Africa’s finest bands. And yet the group, who hail from Cotonou on the south coast of Benin, have never quite enjoyed the success they deserved. Formed in 1968, in the 70s they became popular across west Africa, but a series of deaths led to their breakup just before the west discovered African music

Le Tout-Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo is a difficult ensemble to follow. For one thing, they have functioned under the names Poly Rythmo de Cotonou, TP Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and L'International Poly-Rythmo among others.
