Williams’s band scored its biggest hits in the mid-1940s with Torch Song, featuring vocalist Pearl Bailey, and Cherry Red Blues with singer and saxophonist Eddie Vinson. Ellington wrote New Concerto for Cootie in the early 1960s. Thereafter he worked in Mercer Ellington’s Band until 1975. He was in poor health (1978) but continued to play, including engagements in Europe, until 1983.
